Artificial Intelligence is transforming higher education — and the University of Utah is taking a bold step forward. In a move that could reshape how students and faculty engage with technology, the university has officially rolled out OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu across its entire campus community.
Instead of pushing back against the rise of AI, the University of Utah is leaning in. This specialized version of ChatGPT is purpose-built for higher education and securely integrated into the university’s systems. Every student, professor, and staff member can now request access through the university’s IT Service Catalog and receive login credentials via email.
Chief AI Officer Manish Parashar described this initiative as a milestone in the university’s commitment to using AI responsibly. He explained, “We’ve been steadily laying the groundwork for responsible AI use, and ChatGPT Edu marks a major leap ahead. The University of Utah stands at the forefront of redefining how we teach, learn, and conduct research in the age of generative AI.” Parashar emphasized that this tool would help the campus maintain its innovative edge while staying aligned with institutional values.
ChatGPT Edu is built with education in mind. Unlike personal versions of ChatGPT, it does not use university data for training, and it’s protected by campus-level security measures. That means students and faculty can safely use it for academic purposes without risking data privacy.

Parashar believes this technology will enhance creativity and productivity across all areas of university life. “People will find innovative ways to use it,” he said. “Students might rely on it to support their studies, professors could incorporate it into their teaching, administrators might automate workflows, and researchers can use it to explore literature or crunch data more efficiently.”
But here’s where the conversation gets interesting — not everyone agrees that AI belongs in the classroom. Parashar acknowledged this tension, emphasizing that AI shouldn’t replace the human mind but rather amplify it. “This isn’t a shortcut or a way to cheat,” he said. “Students remain responsible for their own work. What matters is learning how to use AI ethically and effectively — because in almost every future workplace, AI will be part of the toolkit.”
This launch builds on the university’s broader AI strategy. Back in October 2023, the U. announced its $100 million Responsible AI Initiative, focused on exploring ethical and socially beneficial uses of artificial intelligence. That same year, the university also created an official Office of AI to lead these efforts.
“How do we make the most of this technology?” Parashar asked. “It’s about helping us fulfill our mission — advancing research, driving innovation, educating future generations, and creating positive societal impact. Having access to cutting-edge technology like this is a crucial step toward that goal.”
To support this rollout, the University of Utah is also introducing training resources for faculty and students, available through its At The U website. These sessions will guide users through responsible and effective uses of ChatGPT Edu for academic and administrative purposes.
