The weight of the world rests on Ukraine's shoulders as peace talks drag on, entering a second day of intense negotiations.
President Zelenskyy, alongside US envoys, engaged in a marathon session in Berlin, lasting over five hours. While the specifics remain under wraps, the talks are set to continue. This high-stakes meeting comes amidst a brutal conflict, the deadliest in Europe since World War II.
"In-depth discussions regarding the 20-point plan for peace, economic agendas, and more were held by representatives. Significant progress was made, and they will reconvene tomorrow morning," stated White House envoy Steve Witkoff on X. This hints at the complexity of the situation and the delicate balance being struck.
Zelenskyy's schedule also included meetings with key European allies – the leaders of Germany, Britain, and France – on December 15. The question of whether these talks would proceed as planned, be delayed, or merge with the US-Ukraine discussions remained unanswered.
But here's where it gets controversial... Zelenskyy is reportedly considering a significant compromise: potentially abandoning Ukraine's long-held ambition to join NATO in exchange for robust Western security guarantees. This is a bold move, considering that NATO membership is enshrined in Ukraine's constitution.
"From the very beginning, Ukraine's desire was to join NATO -- these are real security guarantees," Zelenskyy shared in a WhatsApp chat. He further explained that bilateral security guarantees with the US, similar to Article 5 guarantees, along with security assurances from European partners and other nations, could prevent another Russian invasion. He also added that any such guarantees should be legally binding.
And this is the part most people miss... Moscow, however, is downplaying the significance of the Berlin talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted that Kyiv must be barred from any move to join the Western military alliance. Many NATO members, including the United States, have also ruled out Ukraine's entry under current conditions.
Meanwhile, as diplomacy unfolds, the war rages on. Russian drone attacks have targeted Ukrainian cities, causing casualties, while Ukrainian forces have retaliated with strikes on Russian soil. Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched over 1,500 attack drones, nearly 900 guided aerial bombs, and 46 missiles against Ukraine that week.
"Russia is dragging out the war and seeks to inflict as much harm as possible on our people," Zelenskyy stated.
