The tragic death of Anna Kepner, an 18-year-old, on a Carnival cruise ship has been officially ruled a homicide, leaving many questions unanswered. This devastating news, confirmed by her family and documented in a death certificate issued on Monday, reveals a grim reality. The certificate explicitly states the cause of death as "mechanical asphyxia," with the injury occurring on November 6, although the exact time remains unknown. It further indicates that Anna's death was caused by "other person(s)."
But here's where it gets controversial: details surrounding the incident are still emerging. Autopsy and toxicology reports have yet to be released, and the Miami-Dade medical examiner has refrained from commenting. The FBI, which is involved in the investigation, has also remained silent.
Anna was discovered on the Carnival Horizon ship while vacationing with her family, including her grandparents, father, stepmother, siblings, and stepsiblings. According to a security source, she was found under a bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered by life vests.
Previously, the Kepner family shared with ABC News that the FBI had indicated Anna's death was likely due to asphyxiation, possibly caused by a bar hold, which involves an arm across the neck.
And this is the part most people miss: a court filing in an unrelated family court matter has raised the possibility of charges against Anna's stepbrother, who is a minor. However, no charges have been filed at this time.
Anna's grandparents shared that she was an independent young woman preparing to graduate high school in May and had aspirations of joining the Navy. Her grandfather, Jeffrey Kepner, poignantly stated, "We were looking forward to seeing her grow."
