The NES swan song

Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl (https://www.nintendolife.com/tags/box-art-brawl).

Last week’s epic battle pitted Europe and North America against Japan to decide which Metroid Prime Pinball design is the best. It was a tight contest, but Japan edged ahead with 55% of the vote. Bravo!

This time around, in celebration of the announced Mega Man: Dual Override (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch-2/mega-man-dual-override) for Switch and Switch—though we’ll have to wait until 2027 for it to arrive—our focus returns to the NES to examine Mega Man 6. The game didn’t receive a European release, but it did launch in Japan in 1993 and in the US in 1994, roughly alongside Mega Man X (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/snes/megamanx) on the SNES.

North America

In a notable shake-up, the North American cover features Mega Man wearing the red Rush Jet Adaptor. It’s a striking composition and a big upgrade compared with the muddier box art from earlier games.

Japan

Japan’s cover sticks to a familiar approach: cram as many characters as possible onto the front. It works, though. The yellow color scheme, the classic ‘Rockman’ logo, and the unmistakable Mega Man aesthetic all look terrific and true to form.

Thanks for voting! See you next time for another Box Art Brawl.
