Get ready for an exciting journey as we dive into the world of art and creativity! Nine Gloucestershire artists are about to embark on a transformative gallery residency, and we're thrilled to share their inspiring stories.
The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham has announced a year-long program called "We Are Creators" to nurture emerging talent. But here's where it gets controversial: these artists are not just given a platform; they're provided with an entire ecosystem to thrive.
A unique opportunity awaits these nine individuals, offering them the time, space, and mentorship to refine their craft and establish their artistic voices.
Oliver Tipper, the creative communities producer at The Wilson, couldn't be more excited. He highlights the exceptional caliber of this year's cohort and the enhanced support system with structured mentoring for each artist.
Funded by the National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England, this program has already supported 24 residencies and delivered five diverse exhibitions. The 2026 cohort is an eclectic mix of talents, ranging from contemporary ink painters to experimental animators and portrait photographers.
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the art. It's about the artists' growth, resilience, and confidence-building.
Bo Lanyon, a Bristol-based artist and doctoral researcher who will lead the mentoring program, understands the challenges artists face. Their aim is to empower these creators with the tools to sustain their practices and find their unique voices.
Each resident artist will receive studio space, peer support, and individual mentoring, with opportunities to showcase their work at the gallery.
So, what do you think? Is this program a game-changer for emerging artists? Or is it just a fancy title with limited impact? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
