The highly anticipated Disney+ series, Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, is set to bring back a crucial part of George Lucas' canceled show, Star Wars: Underworld. Since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the franchise has expanded with various movies and series, but this revival marks a unique return to Lucas' original vision.
Lucas' Vision for Underworld:
Before the sale to Disney, Lucas envisioned Star Wars: Underworld as a live-action, multi-season series with a darker tone, targeting an older audience. The story would have been set in the criminal underworld of Coruscant, a planet under the Empire's rule, between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. With 60 episode scripts written, the series would have featured familiar characters like Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Han Solo, and Lando Calrissian.
Lucas described it as a blend of '40s film noir, a unique take on the Star Wars universe. However, the project was ultimately scrapped due to its high budget, estimated at $40 million per episode.
Maul — Shadow Lord: A Noir Revival:
Disney's upcoming series, Maul — Shadow Lord, takes inspiration from Lucas' vision. Set on the planet Janix, it follows Maul, a criminal mastermind, as he rebuilds his syndicate. The show combines stylized animation with a gritty, noir aesthetic, reminiscent of Lucas' original concept. While Maul's character has evolved from a villain to a protagonist, his moral ambiguity and willingness to use violence remain central to the story.
A new character, Brander Lawson, adds further depth. Lawson, a former bounty hunter turned detective, must navigate the morally complex pursuit of Maul, who may be the planet's best defense against the Empire. This revival promises to bring the gritty storytelling and moral ambiguity that fans of Lucas' canceled series have been longing for.
