First Aid Training for Road Safety Stakeholders in Ghana | St John Ambulance (2026)

Imagine a world where anyone can spring into action during an emergency—this is the vision that St John Ambulance Ghana is striving to create. Recently, they organized an enlightening seminar focused on first aid training and road safety, specifically tailored for key players in the transportation sector.

The primary goal of this initiative was to enhance participants' understanding of how to respond effectively during accidents, especially crucial during this busy holiday season when incidents are more frequent.

Held under the inspiring theme "From a Bystander to Everyday Hero: Be Prepared to Save a Life," the event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including representatives from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, transport operators, and officials from the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA).

In a speech delivered by the Head of Administration, Louisa Ama Eshun, the Chief Executive Officer of St John Ambulance, Dr. Anthony Apedzi, emphasized the powerful message behind the theme. He pointed out that every day brings a multitude of accidents on our roads, ranging from minor collisions to life-threatening events. In these critical moments, the difference between life and death often hinges not just on the arrival of medical assistance, but on the actions taken by the very first individuals who witness the event.

Dr. Apedzi remarked, "A bystander faced with an emergency may opt to remain paralyzed by fear. In contrast, an everyday hero takes a brave step forward, equipped with knowledge, confidence, and the will to help." He underscored the importance of this training, which aims to impart essential skills such as remaining calm, managing bleeding, supporting respiratory function, ensuring personal safety, and providing effective assistance until professional help arrives.

Addressing the esteemed stakeholders in attendance, Dr. Apedzi noted, "As influencers in road safety throughout Ghana, you already serve as leaders in your respective domains. However, after this training, you will transform from mere leaders into lifesavers. You will be the hands that halt the bleeding, the voice that offers reassurance, and the calming presence that instills hope amid chaos."

Throughout the seminar, representatives from NRSA, the Fire Service, MTTD, and DVLA took turns educating transport operators and volunteers about their specific responsibilities and expectations following the training.

Emmanuel Asante, the Ashanti Regional Coordinator for St John Ambulance, made a heartfelt appeal to the participants, particularly with the festive Christmas and New Year season approaching. He urged them to take the training seriously and to share the valuable first aid skills and knowledge they acquired with their colleagues.

"Together, we have the power to foster a culture of preparedness, confidence, and a readiness to act," he stated. "Let us strive to conduct ourselves responsibly on the road as committed citizens. It’s time to transition from being mere bystanders to becoming everyday heroes."

This call to action not only serves to empower individuals but also raises an important question: How prepared are we, as a society, to step up in times of crisis? What role will you play in fostering a safer community?
