After securing a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Annan believes the team can reach the pinnacle of success. "It's not far off, if we keep pushing," she asserts. With her impressive track record, including two Olympic golds as a player and coaching the Dutch to victory, Annan knows what it takes to reach the top.
But what sets China apart from the world's best? According to Annan, it's a small gap, one that can be bridged with hard work and smart strategies. Under her guidance, the team has already tasted gold at the 2022 Asian Games and come agonizingly close in Paris, losing in a penalty shootout. That narrow defeat only fuels her belief that China can rise to the occasion.
"We're focusing on playing faster and smarter," Annan explains. At the National Games in Yunfu, she's scouting the next generation of talent, meticulously evaluating performances against strict criteria. "We've designed a system specifically for this tournament. It's an excellent database for player development," she adds.
Annan describes the competition as exceptional, with a long list of potential future stars. "Having 70 names on our radar is extraordinary. I didn't have that luxury when coaching the Netherlands. It's a phenomenal opportunity." She finds the women's matches more exciting, praising the inclusion of young players. "Seeing a 16-year-old in national competition is thrilling, a contrast to the Dutch system."
Her coaching philosophy emphasizes player autonomy. "I believe in giving the team responsibility." She motivates her players with Mandarin phrases like "Jiayou!" and "Baifenbai chuanqiu," encouraging them to give it their all.
To accelerate their growth, Annan has arranged about 50 international matches annually, mostly in Europe. "Before my arrival, they rarely played in Europe or against diverse teams. Now, we play 50 games a year, which is crucial for our progress."
Annan also highlights cultural differences between the Chinese and Dutch systems. "Chinese players need to develop mentally. Rest is equally important. It's about finding the right balance."
China's next big test will be the FIH Pro League matches in February 2026 in Yunfu, where they'll face the Netherlands and England. Off the field, Annan feels at home in China, drawn to its culture and sense of safety. Her wrist bracelets, a mix of purchases and gifts, symbolize her connection to the country.
"I love wearing them. It's a Chinese tradition, and I embrace it."
