Bondi Attack on Jewish Community: Starmer Calls It 'Sickening' - Hanukkah Tragedy (2026)

A chilling reminder of the ongoing threat to Jewish communities worldwide has emerged from Bondi Beach, Australia, where a Hanukkah celebration turned into a tragic shooting incident. Sir Keir Starmer, the UK's Prime Minister, has condemned the attack as "sickening."

The aftermath is devastating: 11 lives lost and 29 individuals hospitalized. Police reports paint a grim picture of the event, which unfolded on a Sunday evening at Bondi Beach.

In a statement, Starmer emphasized the UK's solidarity with Australia and the Jewish community, highlighting the government's collaboration with the Community Security Trust (CST) to enhance security measures for Hanukkah events in the UK.

The Metropolitan Police has responded by increasing its presence in Jewish communities, conducting additional patrols, and engaging with community leaders to address safety concerns.

"The reality is stark: Jewish communities globally face a heightened threat level. As London's Jewish communities gather for Hanukkah, we understand the deep sense of unease and fear this attack has caused," the police force stated.

This incident follows a similar attack in October, where two people lost their lives during an assault on a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The UK's Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) has called for urgent action, urging the police and government to protect Hanukkah celebrations, which commence this evening and span eight days.

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a festival of light typically observed in December, and the JLC's statement reflects a sense of despair and anger: "We are devastated and outraged that Jews in Sydney appear to have been targeted simply for their faith."

They continue, "We are acutely aware that such hatred is not confined to Australia; we are still reeling from the attack on a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur. As we prepare to celebrate Chanukah over the next eight nights, we call on the government and law enforcement to collaborate with our community to safeguard Jewish lives in the UK and ensure the safety of events this week. We cannot allow hatred to overshadow the festival of light."

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, has pledged to increase the Met's visibility in Jewish communities ahead of Hanukkah events, while Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood affirmed the government's collaboration with CST to police events across the UK.

Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, expressed his grief, stating, "I was en route to a Hanukkah event, which should have been a celebration, but instead, our community is mourning once again." He extended his support to the Jewish community worldwide, especially those in Australia, who are familiar with this fear and loss.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has offered its support to Australian partners and is in dialogue with the UK government to discuss an appropriate response. They emphasized the international nature of the challenges posed by terrorism and antisemitism, calling for concerted efforts to address these issues.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has advised British nationals affected by the shooting to contact the Sydney consulate for assistance.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against antisemitism and the need for global unity in the face of such hatred.

What are your thoughts on the importance of international collaboration in addressing these challenges? Do you believe enough is being done to protect Jewish communities worldwide? We invite you to share your perspectives in the comments below.
