The market correction essentially wiped out the gains made since the October crash, leaving many investors feeling the sting.
Bitcoin (BTC) took a tumble, dipping below the $106,000 mark after trading above $110,000 overnight. This represents a 4% drop in the last 24 hours and an 8% decrease over the past week. But here's where it gets interesting: the altcoins suffered even more. Ethereum (ETH) plunged below $3,600, down 7% in a day and a staggering 14% over the week. Solana (SOL), BNB, Dogecoin (DOGE), and Cardano (ADA) also saw prices plummet by 8% to 10%.
The ripple effect of this price decline was felt across the derivatives markets, leading to the liquidation of over $1 billion in leveraged trading positions. This highlights the inherent volatility and risk involved in these types of investments.
Despite the recent downturn, some analysts remain optimistic. Tom Lee, co-founder and CIO of FundStrat Capital, believes Bitcoin could still reach $200,000 by the end of the year, with Ethereum potentially hitting $7,000 before 2026. However, even his firm, Bitmine, the largest corporate holder of ETH, saw a 7.5% decrease during the sell-off. Lee's perspective is that fundamentals are currently driving prices and that a year-end rally is still possible.
But here's a point of potential controversy: While crypto markets were down, the stock market, fueled by the ongoing AI boom, initially surged but later lost momentum. Major crypto firms like Circle and Gemini also experienced significant drops in their share prices.
