In a remarkable start to the 2026 season, two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova showcased her prowess by decisively defeating Australia's Maya Joint with a score of 6-4, 6-1 during the United Cup held in Sydney on Tuesday. This victory secured a crucial 1-0 lead for Czechia in an important tie.
At 30 years old and currently ranked WTA No. 63, Krejcikova made a comeback after being sidelined for the first five months of 2025. She established an early advantage against Australia’s top player, Joint, who had missed her team’s initial match due to illness. Despite Joint managing to close the score to 4-3, Krejcikova maintained her composure and took the first set 6-4.
The second set saw Krejcikova continuing her dominant performance, as she swiftly won the first four games, ultimately clinching the match with a final score of 6-4, 6-1 in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.
"I’m very happy with my performance," Krejcikova expressed after the match. "I felt great from start to finish. The support was fantastic. The first set had its ups and downs, but I’m glad I managed to pull through. I aimed to play aggressively from the outset, and it’s beneficial to have some matches under my belt. Today, I felt more comfortable on the court."
Looking ahead, Czech player Jakub Mensik is set to compete against Alex de Minaur in the next singles match of the tie, hoping to build on Krejcikova’s strong start.
Both teams, Czechia and Australia, emerged victorious in their opening matches, meaning that the outcome of this tie will determine the leader of Group D. The losing team will need to await results to see if they qualify as one of the best second-placed teams from Sydney.
